It is getting warm again in the Netherlands!! When the sun finally comes out, I always feel that pressure to make the most of it. But let’s be real. With a toddler and a baby, I’m not setting up Pinterest-worthy garden setups (I wish). I’m just trying to keep them busy, happy, and not melting.
Here’s what we actually do when it’s warm out. Simple stuff that doesn’t take forever to prep and keeps both kids entertained for more than five minutes.
Set Up a Water Table
If you’ve followed me for a bit, you know I love water tables. Best purchase ever. The kids get to splash, pour, and make a mess — and I get a coffee break. We actually took the legs off ours, popped it straight on the ground, and put a parasol over it so my 9-month-old could join in too.
Go for a Bike Ride
If it’s not too hot, a bike ride is perfect. You get a breeze, the kids get an adventure, and you get to move a bit. We reviewed the Qibbel Air Rear Seat and the Bobike Front Seat if you’re curious what we use.
Also, snacks and water are non-negotiable. We biked to the forest a few days ago and it was much cooler there than at home.
A Walk in the Shade
I’m not a morning person but I’ll admit, early walks are gold in warm weather. We try to get outside first thing or stick to shaded routes later in the day. The fresh air helps all of us reset a bit.
Picnic in the Park
We keep picnics super simple. Blanket, fruit, some toys, done. The kids love eating outside, even if it’s just bananas and raisins. There’s a small public pool near us too which is great when it’s hot, but it does get crowded. Maybe you have one nearby? Let me know if you’ve got good spots in your city!
Backyard Splash Zone
If you’ve got the space, any water play works. We bought a fun pool from HEMA and a little splash pool from Kruidvat. But honestly, even a couple of buckets or mixing bowls with water and toys does the trick. Just set it up in the shade and let them go wild.
Chill Time With Books or Puzzles
After all that, they usually crash for a bit. We grab some books or puzzles and sit in the shade. Quiet time saves the day (and my sanity).
Final Tips
Don’t forget sunscreen — I slap it on before we even leave the house or it just won’t happen. Hats, light clothes, water bottles within reach. And a cold smoothie for all of you never hurts either, and if you have leftovers, put it in the freezer so that you have homemade ice creams the next day.
These are the things that have saved us on warm days when I’ve run out of ideas or energy. If you’ve got favorites your kids love, tell me! I’m always looking for new ways to survive the heat with two little ones.
